DIY Gifts: Copper & White Votives

DIY Gifts: Copper & White Votives

I've been wanting to experiment with plaster casting ever since I stumbled upon it on Pinterest and YouTube a few months ago. I've watched way too many tutorials about all different types of plaster, clay, epoxy, etc. casting and, but never having done it before I wanted to start simple. I also wanted to make something that would be a nice little gift for Christmas and could look festive or fit in during the rest of the year. So I went with a cast plaster votive with gold and copper accents. On trend, indeed! The added bonus is that it used simple paper cups for the mold, so it seemed like this would be easy as pie.

I've put together this video tutorial to show you how I prepared for and completed my first casting session, so it's a bit more casual than the others this week. It also shows you that all my crafts don't always go exactly to plan. In light of that, here's my tips, now that I've done it.

TIPS:

  • The Plaster of Paris box I got had "Sets in 20-30 minutes" on the front, but then on the back it said "hardens in an hour." I tried de-molding them after 30 minutes, but they needed the hour.
  • The cups you use is important. Try to find flat-bottomed, relatively thin, smooth cups to prevent weird indentations and the broken bottoms I suffered in my video.
  • You want to weigh down the inner cup of your mold, but don't put too much in it or your bottom will be too thin.
  • Handle carefully while de-molding or it will break.
  • Don't mix with a chopstick, that's dumb.

Now it's time for the video.

As I said in the video, this is the last DIY Gift tutorial for this week. Tomorrow will be a post all about other tutorials you can attempt that I had yet to attempt. And next week it's time for CHRISTMAS TREATS! #YUM #blessed #toomanyhashtags #basic?me?noway! #hastagscanthavepunctuation #seriouslytoomanyhashtags #Iwillstopnow
