DIY Gifts: Plates

DIY Gifts: Plates

Another day of DIY Gifts because it's DIY Gifts time here on Heart Says Hey. This one in particular is one I've been wanting to try for a while, ever since I discovered Dishwasher Safe Mod Podge. Who would thing such a thing could exist??? This magical crafting supply got me thinking about all the gifts I could make for folks. I've tried out some of those ideas and wanted to share the results here on my blog, as well as on my YouTube Channel, with this nifty tutorial. I've made these four different glass plates using two different methods of employing Mod Podge. The first two use glue and paper to make designs, while the second uses the glue to attach different types of glitter to the plates. All are a little messy, but I'm really liking the results, especially the glitter ones.

Tips:

  • This is a pretty easy project, but does take some time to complete. You need to apply multiple coats and let them dry 1-2 hrs between each coat. You also need to let it cure for 28 days before it can be washed, so make sure you let anyone you give this to know that.
  • Though it is non-toxic, the manufacturer's instructions say not to put it on surfaces from which you will be eating directly. That's why I glued everything to the bottom of the dish.
  • I used very thin tissue paper, medium think cardstock, and some newsprint-type paper and if I were to do this again, I'd definitely stick with the newsprint or something similar. It didn't tear as easily as the tissue paper and was easier shape than the cardstock.

Onward with the tutorial!
