Summer Round-up: Entertain Me

Summer Round-up: Entertain Me

In years past, Summer has been deficient in the entertainment department (except for the Summer Movie Blockbusters, of course). With the advent of YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Prime and Summer Premieres, that has all changed. This Summer was hoping to get back into the movie release game, but I was overwhelmed with what other forms of entertainment had to offer, so I only had time to see a few things in theaters.  For today’s Summer Round-up we are looking at the world of Entertainment. I'm going to be positive and only highlight my favorite summer movie, tv shows and YouTubers, just what you should check out if you didn’t get a chance.

I just took a look at what was released this Summer and all in all, kind of lackluster. No wonder I didn’t make it to the theaters that often. There are a few notable exceptions, as well as some things that were released on streaming services.

PICKS

I did not want to see this because the trailer made it look like nonsense. That movie though! It was funny, tragic, exciting, and heartfelt, with a story that had just enough to keep you on your feet. Also Chris Pratt can really do no wrong.

It was really early summer (April), but I think I ended up seeing it in May, so its summer for me. It’s hard to decide which movie in the Marvel Cine-verse I love the most. In all seriousness, sometimes if you see me alone deep in thought, I may be debating which is my favorite quietly to myself. Oh, Daphne’s Inner Monologue, you are silly. If they keep making great movies like the Winter Soldier, this debate is going to get more and more heated. Stop it Marvel! Besides the great plot and excellent casting, it has introduced the Hydra storyline that is going to make ripples in the rest of the universe. I love nothing more than inter-related massive story arcs!

I saw this over the summer, but I don’t think it is a summer movie per se. But who can say no to a little sleuthing in summer. Watch it if you haven’t.

Days of Future Past: First Class did a lot to redeem the X-Men franchise (though I am a hardcore X-Men fangirl, so I would really watch any X-Men movie and find enjoyment in it). Days of Future Past, though not a direct translation of the infamous story arc, was in my eyes magnificent. The acting was SPOT ON. The old cast and new cast combined to make one “happy” (if a little bit dysfunctional) family. And that scene with Quicksilver really made the movie

A Netflix pick and a really weird movie. I’m still not quite sure what happened in it, but it follows the travels of a pregnant fundamentalist Mormon teen, who leaves her compound to find the father of her apparently miraculously conceived baby. Confused? Me too! But the soundtrack is amazing and the performances are nuanced and interesting. And it marks the return of Billy Zane to my life.

Was this the best movie I’ve ever seen? Not really. But I’m a sucker for someone following their dreams! The movie was a labor of love created by YouTubers turned movie makers. Camp Takota, starring Grace Helbig, Mamrie Hart and Hannah Hart is the story of a twenty-something who’s life falls apart just enough to help her understand what her life really could be. It’s my speed because (1) it hits kind of close to home (2) those three ladies are some of the funniest people in the world. Check it out if only to support talented people doing cool stuff.

Still Looking Forward to Seeing

Neighbors, Boyhood, The Fault in Our Stars, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, 22 Jump Street, Lucy

I love TV. I said it. It’s true. There’s a lot on this list, so I’ll try to limit myself to one sentence reviews/reasons to watch.

I was fascinated that people were willing to do this. People fascinate me and this is great way to get into their heads.

The first episode had old people in a car chase in Yorkshire, England and also those same old people falling back in love after many years apart. All that and a great supporting cast = magic.

Adventure Time:  sometimes you just need a wacky and ridiculous cartoon to distract you from the weird world we live in. Adventure Time fits the bill and then some.

I loved the first couple of episodes and actually bought the book because I was so interested. Waiting until Halloween to catch up on it because that’s the perfect time for zombie-vampire thingys.

I have watched every episode of this classic british murder mystery (some multiple times). FINALLY Netflix has the new series and they are not a disappointment. The perfect amount of evil and quaintness!

After hearing about this so much on Twitter, I sneakily found a way to watch it because there is no way to get it in America. I kind of went back and watched all of the series… And got some tips that are REALLY helping my baking.

YouTube has become my new and favorite form of entertainment. I love that is almost like grassroots media and it puts the power with the creator. People can be successful without compromising themselves. I don’t really stick with one genre of YouTuber, so here are my favorites at the moment.

PICKS

Essiebutton: a makeup blogger/vlogger, who transcends those humble beginnings. She shares her recommendations and thoughts on a wide variety of fashion, beauty, design and life things. And sometimes, just sometimes, she daily vlogs, which is magic, especially when she is hanging out with her bf, Aslan, and greyhound, Reggie.

Jesse Cox:  Jesse does Let’s Play video game playthroughs. He is funny, irreverent, self-effacing, likes to play games with a story, and seems like he is probably just a really nice guy in real life. I'll put him on when I want to play games vicariously through someone because I think he plays games the way I would if I was slightly better. All in all one of my favorite people that I don't actually know.

Gabriella Lindley: I found Gabby through the one and only Zoella. Gabby just works so hard to make very high quality and useful videos and I for one appreciate it. At the same time she shares her life in her vlogs. There she is witty, charming and very real.

Dodger: I always like to see a woman kicking ass in a traditionally-male centric industry. Dodger does that in the video game world, playing some really ridiculous games and sharing her take on the industry as a whole. And you really can’t beat her voice acting in her playthroughs.

Sorted Food: these boys simply inspired me to rediscover my love of cooking. So much love.

Favorite one-offs

These are just hilarious, touching, thought-provoking and/or just worth sharing. ENJOY THE FRUITS OF MY OBSESSION!
