Breweries of Maine

Breweries of Maine

Just a couple of days ago I mentioned that I started on my GREEN BREWERY ADVENTURE. I highlighted a couple of breweries that has particularly green practices, but didn’t have a chance to talk about all the places I went and their beers. Southern Maine and New Hampshire are chockful of great breweries, so I couldn’t help but put together a second photo. This time just about the beer.

SoMe Brewing Co.

SoMe is a tiny brewery and tasting room right in York. They have a small selection of rotating taps and had a few tasty choices when we visited. My favorite was the Whoop(s?)ie Pie stout. Delicious, not necessarily for summer, but oh would I love it in winter. The room itself is welcoming and friendly and was filled with folks coming to get their growlers refilled.

Maine Beer Company

I loved the Maine Beer Co. for their environmental endeavours, but it wasn’t my favorite beer tasting location. Though I can see it being a favorite for MANY. That’s because it is all about the hops with them. I’m not a hoppy IPA person, so you can see why I preferred Allagash and Tributary. I did like their Weez Black Ale because it wasn’t super hoppy and had a cool porter-ish taste in much lighter beer.

Tributary Brewing Co.

Tributary is a little brewery that was started by Tod Mott, who if you know anything about brewers, you know who he is. But even if you don’t know who he is, this beer will prove his greatness. There were four on tap when I visited a Witbier, an American Mild, a Pale Ale, and a Hefeweizen.  I’ve never tried so many beers that I really, really liked (except maybe Allagash). They were all just superb. The Hefeweizen, my perennial favorite no matter the brewery, was top of my list. With all kinds of wheat-y goodness and just a tiny hint of banana. So great.

Allagash Brewing Co.

I definitely praised Allagash in my last post. And I’m going to praise them again. They were great. The beer, the tour, the brewery, the tasting room--- all exactly what I wanted in my visit. I got to taste 4 types of beers and appreciated them all for their different merits. The Allagash White the breweries main seller may be my new go to summer beer. Refreshing and mellow, with some cloudy wheaty goodness. They took us into their weird beer cask room and my only complaint is that they only had a couple for us to try and not nearly enough types in their cold case to take home. I WANT TO TRY THAT STRAWBERRY BEER.

Red Hook Brewing Co.

Red Hook is not a Maine Brewery, but it’s close by and I visited it for lunch, so it’s here! I really only scratched the surface here and want to go back. They have a ton of beers, a tour and they really know how to brand themselves. Just look at the pictures. The food was nothing to write home about, but I know from experience that the beer is pretty good. I tried the Seedy Blonde Ale which is a Blonde Apple Ale. It was ok. Sort of apple-y. Sort of Blonde, nothing special. I’d be happy to go back to try others though.

So those are the breweries I went to. Well we stopped at Sebago for lunch and didn't have a beer and we grabbed a growler from Oxbow, but didn't do a tasting. I don't feel prepared to have an opinion on those yet, but do check them out! I’ll hopefully be going to those and to others. Check back here and follow me on social media to see when I post those adventures. Thanks for visiting!!
