The Five on Fridays: Week 2

The Five on Fridays: Week 2

I am back with another Friday Five. Two posts makes a series, right? All joking aside, I'm actually quite enthusiastic about these posts because it made me seek out new things to watch/try/experience and spend time thinking about why I liked or didn't like them so much. This series is good for me and hopeful you are enjoying it as well. And now, without further ado, I present to you The Five on Friday.

1. Daniel J. Layton. As his YouTube end implies, Daniel J. Layton is a British actor, but I best know him for his honest, funny, sometimes slightly satirical or irreverent videos. I like his videos because it feels like he is trusting us with his semi-insider views of the quickly growing (and commercializing) YouTube community and what it's like to be trying to make your way through it when you aren't a Zoella or a Tyler Oakley. I like that he made a promise to film videos every week and has done it. I like that he does collaborations and just films them so it we feel like he is just hanging out with his friends (which I think he is). I like that he can make fun of himself. I like that he is self-reflective and shares those thoughts with us and in a way makes you want to do the same.  I like that he is just very funny. And he (attempts to) bake. Or he may not be or do any of these things. If so, he is really a great actor indeed. This is one of my favorite of his recent videos.

2. Star Wars: The New Republic Anthology. You might have heard that today is #ForceFriday. Something something Star Wars toys? Not quite sure exactly, but it's a day when people are hyped about the upcoming Star Wars movie. I got hyped on Wednesday when I saw this fantastic video that I thought was a teaser for the first in the companion Star Wars Anthology movie series on Geek & Sundry's The Concession Stand. When they told me it wasn't an official trailer, it was a "fanmade" trailer by Eric Demeussy, I was blown away. True Demeussy has industry experience (according to The Verge he made the Game of Thrones opening), but it's still amazing how much can be done without being a big movie studio these days.

3. Fear The Walking Dead. It's the spin-off from The Walking Dead, one of my favs, so I had to check it out. And I'm cautiously optimistic about the direction it's going. I was a little wary that it was taking us back to the beginning of the zombie outbreak because it could end up looking a little cliche. I feel, however, that it has a interesting twist on it because it feels so real and is using details that really capture the zeitgeist, the social unrest we are facing right now. I do spend a lot of time yelling at the people of the screen because they are doubtful of the realness of threat. Hindsight (and zombie preparedness) is 20/20, I guess. They are picking it though, so I'm really looking forward to episodes to come.  You can check out the trailer below and the show on AMC or AMC.com (if you are a cable/satellite subscriber).

4. The Evil Ted Channel. I have always wanted to learn how to make cosplay and prop things. Evil Ted Smith is teaching me.  He's got a small, but growing collection of videos on YouTube and is working on Geek & Sundry's Twitch with Jessica Merizan and Stef Woodburn to make armor for Trinket the Bear (long story). I can't wait to try out what I'm learning!

5. Scary Game Squad Plays Until Dawn. Jesse Cox has long been one of my fav YouTube Gamer people. He raised his game when he started something called The Scary Game Squad in which he played a scary game with some of his YouTube Gamer friends. Sounds simple, deceptively simple, because it belies the extreme humor contained within this series. It got one million percent better this week when he released the newest season (for lack of a better word) of the series. They are playing Until Dawn and I can't get enough. They are extra funny and the game is really good. Check out game even if you don't check out the videos.

Well, that's it. Check out my social media if you want to be notified when I post new things.
