The Five on Fridays: Week 5

The Five on Fridays: Week 5

1. Call the Midwife (BBC/Available on Netflix). Something magical has happened; Netflix has been restocked with new seasons of shows I love, movies I have yet to see, and shows that I missed the boat on. Call the Midwife is one of the shows with a new season and one that I come back to and watch again and again. It's the TV adaptation of a memoir of the same name and shares the stories the midwives and nurses caring for the families living in the East End of London in the late 50s/early 60s. It is an emotionally charged, honest, and interesting look at a time that was in the scheme of things not too long ago, but feels worlds away. It can be sentimental and feel-good at times, but does not sugarcoat the difficulties, prejudices and mistakes of the time, making it utterly watchable. I'm just sad that I watched the newest season so quickly.

2. The Michalaks (YouTube).  There are so many vloggers out there sharing their day-to-day life, but I have yet to find any that I like as much as Hannah and Stef Michalak. They produce a beautifully shot and authentically sincere weekly vlog sharing their lives with their (now toddler) son, Grayson. They are interesting people, who genuinely love each other and their son, live in a great city, London, share a piece of their lives and put so much effort into it, making it a pleasure to watch every Sunday. I also love that though they are sharing the vlogs with us, they are actually making them for their son and hope that he will continue the tradition when he himself is old enough to vlog. It's just such a lovely gift and they are lovely people, not in that overly saccharine way, but in a "I would be friends with you" kind of way. Check out their most recent vlog, it's a good one.

3. Fall TV Premieres. I posted about my love of Fall TV already, but now the wait is over and the PREMIERES ARE HERE! Not only do I have returning favorites that will answer at least some of last season's unanswered question, but I also have new shows to watch and perhaps find new favorites. So great. I'll catch up with you all in early October to share my thoughts, but for now I hope you are as excited as I am about the possibilities.

4. IKEA Prints. Everyday I sit at my desk and look to my right and see these three travel prints about Paris, London (how many times can I mention that city in this post?) and New York and they just make me smile. And I have IKEA to thank for that. IKEA truly is a treasure when it comes to decor. They have a large selection of prints and super affordable frames and I would have so many more if I didn't have so many things on my wall already. It might be the most obvious decorating tip, besides having plants, but putting something on the wall really makes a room feel so much more lived in and homey. Or is the perfect way to change things up. So give it a try.

5. Dark Wine/Berry/Maroon/Cherry for Fall. The air has turned a little bit cooler and according to the calendar summer has been replaced by fall. This means my wardrobe has shifted to include light sweaters and socks, and though I don't normally change my makeup or nail color too much to account for seasons, I'm loving a certain color for fall. There's this deep dark red that could be wine (but not as purple) or berry (but not as pink) or maroon (but not as brown) or even black cherry (but not as red), it's just the perfect dark color for nails, lips, clothes, really anything and most people I think. Check out Nails Inc. in Victoria and Revlon Super Lustrous Lip Color in Black Cherry because they hit the mark.
