June 2015 Playlist

All the songs I loved in June!

Do you remember back when we used to listen to the radio in the car? Before we had Satellite radio and blue tooth and iPhones and access to every single song with iTunes, YouTube, Spotify and the like? The taglines for radios stations were things like “Today’s best music” or “All the hits from the 70s, 80s, 90s and today.” This list feels like a version of those slogans. It is a weird genre hopping, decade crossing, expectation smashing mish-mash. And basically I didn’t hear a song I didn’t like this month. This playlist has ALL THE SONGS (not really, but it kinda feels like it).

I’ve chosen six of them to wax poetic and extol their virtues.

  1. Come and Get It by John Newman. My beloved (I loved his first album( John Newman is back! Soul with a pop beat. The song itself is not my absolute favorite, but his swoon-worthy, melt inducing vocals kept me listening all month. I am truly looking forward to his album, sure to be released soon.
  2. Children of the Wild by Steve Angello feat. Mako. This is my obligatory “dance” song for the month, though this one is a little bit different because it’s such a slow burn (not tooooo slow though). The beat is at slightly reminiscent of Coldplay at first, until it builds to the dance-frenzy bits. And backs off. This weirdness is intriguing and left it as one of my very favorites this month.
  3. 1992 by AIRBAGONE. I know very little bit about this song and band. I think they might be French? Other than that, it reminded me of another band or song that I’ve heard in the recent past… I just can’t quite place it. Nevertheless, I like it’s synth-heavy melody and catchy melody.
  4. Could Have Been Me by The Struts. ANOTHER SONG I COULDN’T PLACE!!! WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME? I did have a bit of a think and they sounds a little bit like early 2000s Indie and just plain rock. Maybe like The Ataris or American Hi-Fi, but with a bit more British. Though I might be completely off. Anyways, this song made the cut because it has that soaring anthem-ic nature that makes me feel young and alive and like I should be hanging out with my friends on a road trip or at a bonfire. A lot of feelings to put on one song, but I feels what I feels.
  5. STONEFIST by Health. This song sounds like The Cure. At I was able to get one right away. So the Cure is one of my favs, as a result I was drawn to the new wave yet gothic nature of this particular song. It’s way more forceful and aggressive than The Cure, so it still has its own identity and feels new.
  6. We Try But We Don’t Fit In by Day Wave. Also sounds familiar, but after that win with Health, I’m not going to try to figure it out. I like this song probably the best out of all the songs on this list because it just sounds like summer to me. It is bright, yet dreamy, sunshiney, but tinged with darkness. I’m definitely checking the rest of the music from Day Wave.

So there we have it the best of the best (IMHO) from June. Check out the spotify playlist for more of the weirdness I discovered out there including songs by Hilary Duff and Beck, neither of whom sound like themselves (which is why their on this list).
