The September 2015 Music Playlist

The September 2015 Music Playlist

I felt bad that I didn't try that hard on August's Playlist so I might have gone overboard and now have more than 30 songs for September. It's been hard, but here are my five ABSOLUTE FAVORITES. (But seriously check out everything on the list too!)

  1. Lady Gaga - Til It Happens to You. There is no part of me that doesn't love Lady Gaga (and I love Katy Perry just as much. I will never choose between them. Does that make me odd?) That said, I'm not not the kind of fan that knows everything about them and their upcoming releases. That's why I was delighted and surprised to find a new Lady Gaga song waiting for me this month. Til It Happens to You was produced for a documentary called The Hunting Ground about campus rape, and definitely feels like a powerful and emotional accompaniment to a film dealing with such a heavy subject, but also speaks to anyone going through a difficult time. Beyond the serious message of the song, Lady Gaga sounds outstanding and the orchestration building perfectly along with the crescendoing lyrics.  Lady Gaga, you never disappoint.
  2. Father John Misty - Chateau Lobby #4 (in C for Two Virgins). Father John Misty, a moniker of J. Tillman formerly of Fleet Foxes, released this song as part of his 2015 Sub Pop Record, I Love You, Honeybear. I haven't had a chance to listen to the rest of this album, but if it's anything like this song (folky, yet poppy, with weird, but meaningful lyrics with a wandering hipster troubadour edge) it might make my album of the year list, if I was still an album-listener.
  3. Mother Mother - Monkey Tree. Mother Mother is a Canadian band out of Vancouver, who, I discovered, have been making music for at least a decade. Their most recent album, Very Good Bad Thing has Monkey Tree, a synth-pop song with wonderful harmonies. I'm not sure I get the lyrics, though I've read that the song is about living in our "animalistic" culture, but I still enjoyed this song this month.
  4. Hozier - Like Real People Do.  Hozier was all over the place last year with his hit single, Take Me to Church, which I definitely loved and put it on my favorite songs of the year list. Also on that album in Like Real People Do which I heard on a show I was watching. I find that a song can mean very little to me if I hear it on an album with a bunch of other songs of a similar ilk. When I hear them in a context of a show or movie, they just speak to me. I think that's what happened with this song. I'm pretty sure that I listened to Hozier's album, but this song only real stood out to me now after hearing it in Teen Wolf. The song itself is quiet, slow and sounds a little bit sad and a little bit romantic. It seems like the perfect song for a chilly, rainy fall day.
  5. The Bloody Beetroots (with Dennis Lyxzen) - Church of Noise. And to round things out, we have to have something that is perfect for dancing. Because I love to hear that beat drop.

BONUS: You might be wondering why Alfred Newman's How the West Was Won Theme is on here. It's simply great. I liked the movie. I liked the music. I got a kick out of hearing that theme come up among the Beyonce and the Sufjan I was listening to this past month. If you liked the theme at all check out my post about the movie and the movie itself.

Thanks for checking out another one of my playlists. Make sure to come back for all the other fun posts I put out every month. And follow me on social media to see when I post!
